The dream speaks no symbolic language, and yet I can reach the unconscious by means of symbolic language: to explore, to give orders, to pole (manipulate) differently.

  • Exploring: I don’t need to “know” my unconscious in order to entrust myself to it; but sometimes it is helpful to put your trust in the attempt to translate it into the symbolic. This is exactly what a remembered dream does (also).
  • Giving orders: I can specifically entrust my unconscious with tasks to be solved, how I can (better) reconcile my desired production with the demands of the symbolic world.
  • Manipulating: one step further than giving orders is the attempt to subordinate the unconscious to the demands of the symbolic world. This has to be done very skillfully and requires considerable effort. One example is the Oedipus myth. The aim of manipulation is the suppression of desire production.
